How long can I drive with a chip in my windshield?

It's best not to wait. Temperature swings, potholes and even a car wash can turn a small chip into a long crack, especially during Michigan winters. When should I replace my windshield?

A windshield usually needs to be replaced when a crack is longer than about six inches, when the damage is directly in the driver's line of sight, when a chip or crack reaches the edge of the glass, or when there are several chips close together. How long does it take to replace a windshield?

What should I do if my car window is shattered?

Cover the opening with plastic and tape to keep out rain and avoid driving with loose glass in the frame. Then get it replaced as soon as you can.
